Getting started
First steps, the tabs and how TourIts fits your trip
What is TourIts and what can it do?
TourIts is a travel toolkit that keeps the practical stuff in one place:
- Packing: a smart list built from a short quiz, with 2,450 travel items to pick from.
- Change Helper: checks whether a cash exchange offer is fair before you hand over your money.
- Trip planner: plan days and stops, see travel times and open directions in your favourite maps app.
- Map: places picked for travellers, from food and bars to pharmacies and exchange stores.
- Translator: text, voice and offline phrasebooks.
Most of it works without an account, and the core tools are free.
How do I move around the app?
The floating bar at the bottom of the screen (we call it the island) has one button per tool:
- Home: your trip at a glance and shortcuts.
- Pack: your packing list.
- Change: the Change Helper for currency exchange.
- Map: places around you.
- Trip: your day-by-day plan.
Tap a button to switch tools. Settings and Help are in the top corner of the Home screen. If you ever get stuck on a screen, use the back or close button in the top-left corner and you will land somewhere sensible.
What were the setup questions for?
When you first open TourIts we ask a few quick questions: your language, where you live, where you are going, how long you are away, a little about you, and whether you want to see religious and heritage sites. We use the answers to tailor the app, for example to pick the right currency, the clerk’s language in the Change Helper and the items on your packing list.
Your answers are stored on your phone. If you sign in, they’re also synced to your private account so they follow you to your other devices. You can change any answer later in Settings → Trip & profile.
How do I change where I’m travelling to?
- Open Settings and tap “Trip & profile”.
- Under Where, tap “I’m travelling to” and pick the new country. You can search by name, and small typos are fine.
- Under Trip, adjust “Trip length” with the + and − buttons if needed.
The Change Helper switches to the local currency and clerk language straight away. Your packing list keeps what you already added, so if the climate or trip type changed a lot, open Pack, tap the ••• button and choose “Ask me the questions again”.
Do I need an account to use TourIts?
No. You can use TourIts as a guest and everything stays on your phone. Guest data is kept for 7 days, then deleted automatically, which suits a quick weekend away.
An account is free and adds:
- Your lists, trips and settings kept safe in the cloud.
- Sync between your devices.
- Rating exchange stores to help other travellers.
- Paid plans (Plus and Pro), which always need an account.
You can create one at any time and keep everything you added as a guest.
Is TourIts free?
Yes, the core app is free: your packing list plus 1 saved list, unlimited Change Helper checks, one trip of up to 3 days with walking and transit estimates, the online map with app picks, 20 online translations a day, read-aloud and 1 offline phrasebook.
If you want more, there are two optional plans:
- Plus: unlimited saved lists and trips, list and trip sharing, drive and bike times, 3 offline map regions, voice input, all phrasebooks and 90-day proof recordings outside GDPR countries.
- Pro: everything in Plus plus unlimited offline regions, offline translation, conversation mode, fair exchange alerts and priority support.
Payments currently run in test mode, so nothing is charged.
How do I change the app language?
- Open Settings.
- Under Preferences, tap Language.
- Search for your language and select it.
- Confirm “Reload now”. TourIts restarts to apply the new language; your data is not affected.
We are translating the app into many languages step by step. Where a translation is not ready yet, you will see English. The clerk phrase in the Change Helper is separate: it is available in 115 languages and follows the country you are visiting.
Which permissions does TourIts ask for, and why?
We only ask when a feature needs it, and everything else keeps working if you say no:
- Location: during setup, to suggest your language and country (your phone’s prompt explains why), and later to show nearby places and to link an exchange rating to the store you used. Only while you use the app.
- Microphone: only when you tap a mic, in the Change Helper or the Translator.
- Notifications: when you turn on a reminder or create a trip, so we can send recaps and reminders.
See what’s allowed in Settings → Privacy & data → Permissions, and change it in your phone’s Settings app.
Do I need internet for TourIts to work?
Many things work offline once they are on your phone:
- Your packing list and trip plan.
- The Change Helper, using the last exchange rates you downloaded.
- Clerk phrases and downloaded phrasebooks.
- Offline map regions you saved.
You need a connection for fresh exchange rates, online map search, travel times, online translation, sharing ratings and cloud sync. Tip: open the app once on Wi-Fi before you leave so rates and downloads are ready.
How do I get help from a person?
If the answers here don’t solve it, contact us:
- Open Help and tap “Contact support” (it’s also in Settings under Support).
- Pick a reason, for example “Something isn’t working”, and add a short subject.
- Describe what happened, which screen you were on and what you expected. Leave “Include app details” on if something looks broken.
This works as a guest too; just add your email so we can reply. You can also write to support@tourits.app. We usually reply within 2 business days, and Pro members get priority. Please never send your password or card details.
Account, login & guest mode
Creating an account, signing in, guest data and sync
How do I create an account?
- Open Settings and tap “Create account or sign in” (or tap the account option during setup).
- Choose “Create account”.
- Enter your email and a password with at least 8 characters.
- Tap “Create account”.
If we ask you to confirm your email, open the link we send, then come back and sign in. Everything you already added as a guest is moved into your new account automatically.
How do I sign in on a new phone?
- Install TourIts and open it.
- On the account step, choose “Create an account”, then switch to “Sign in”. If you skipped setup, go to Settings and tap “Create account or sign in”.
- Enter the same email and password you used before.
Your packing lists, trips and settings download automatically. Proof recordings from the Change Helper are not synced; they stay on the phone that made them.
I forgot my password. What can I do?
- Open the sign-in screen and choose “Sign in”.
- Tap “Forgot password?”.
- Enter your account email and tap Send.
- Open the email from TourIts and follow the link to set a new password.
No email after a few minutes? Check your spam or promotions folder and make sure you typed the same address you signed up with. Still stuck? Contact us from the email address on the account and we’ll help.
I didn’t get the confirmation email
Confirmation emails usually arrive within a minute or two. If yours hasn’t:
- Check spam, junk and promotions folders.
- Search your inbox for “TourIts”.
- Make sure the address is spelled correctly. If it isn’t, create the account again with the right one.
- Wait a few minutes before trying again, because sending many emails quickly can be blocked for a short time.
Once you open the link, return to TourIts and sign in with your email and password.
What happens to my data as a guest?
As a guest, everything you add (packing list, trips, settings, checks) stays only on this phone. Guest data is kept for 7 days from when you started, then permanently deleted from the phone. The account card at the top of Settings shows how many days are left.
Why 7 days? It keeps things tidy and private for quick trips without anyone holding your data. To keep your stuff longer, create a free account before the countdown ends and everything carries over.
Will I lose my guest data if I create an account?
No. When you create an account or sign in, what’s on this phone stays and is uploaded to your account. The 7-day guest countdown stops.
If the account already has data from another phone, the two copies are merged, not replaced:
- Packing items, trips, saved lists and favourites are combined item by item.
- If the same item was edited in both places, the more recently edited copy wins.
- Setup answers you haven’t filled in on this phone are taken from the account.
- Your plan (Free, Plus or Pro) always comes from the account.
If something looks wrong afterwards, contact us and we’ll take a look.
How does cloud sync work?
When you are signed in, your setup answers, packing lists, trips and settings are saved on your phone first and then uploaded to our servers in the EU (Frankfurt). This happens automatically in the background whenever you have a connection. Open TourIts on another device with the same account and your data downloads there too; the two copies are merged, and for the same item the most recent edit wins.
Want to force it? Open Settings → Account and tap “Sync now”. Proof recordings are never uploaded; they stay on the phone that made them.
What happens when I sign out?
Signing out disconnects this phone from your account. Your cloud data stays safe on our servers, and a copy stays on this phone as guest data for 7 days so you don’t lose anything mid-trip.
To sign out: Settings → Account → Sign out, then confirm. Sign in again at any time to reconnect. If you want to remove your data completely, use “Delete my account” instead.
Can I change my email or password?
Password: open Settings → Account and tap “Change password” under Security. Enter a new password with at least 8 characters and tap “Update password”. If you’re signed out and can’t remember it, use “Forgot password?” on the sign-in screen instead.
Email: changing the address on an account isn’t available in the app yet. Contact support from your current email address and tell us the new one; we’ll update it after confirming it’s really you.
How do I delete my account?
- Open Settings → Account.
- Under Danger zone, tap “Delete my account”.
- Confirm.
You can also start from Settings → Privacy & data → Delete my account.
This permanently deletes your account, your cloud data, your reports and everything stored on this phone. It can’t be undone. Test subscriptions end immediately. Once real billing is live, also cancel any subscription in your App Store or Google Play settings, because deleting the account doesn’t stop store billing on its own.
Can I use TourIts on more than one device?
Yes. Sign in with the same account on each phone or tablet and your lists, trips and settings stay in sync. Paid plans follow your account, so Plus or Pro works on every device where you are signed in.
A few things stay on the device where they were made: proof recordings, downloaded offline map regions and offline language packs. You can download regions and packs again on each device.
How is my account kept secure?
- Your password is never stored in readable form; our sign-in provider stores only a secure hash.
- All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted.
- Each account can only read and change its own data, enforced on the server.
- Payment details are handled by Apple or Google, never by TourIts.
Tips: use a password you don’t use anywhere else, and sign out on phones you no longer use. If you think someone accessed your account, reset your password and contact us.
Packing lists
Building, filtering and ticking off your packing list
How is my packing list made?
Your list starts from your setup answers: destination, trip length, age and trip style. We add the essentials automatically and then the packing quiz asks about the less obvious items, grouped by category. Answer “Pack it” or “Skip” for each one.
The quiz skips the obvious stuff because it’s already on your list. Behind the scenes there’s a catalog of 2,450 travel items, each with tips, so you can add anything else by searching.
How do I add an item that isn’t in the list?
- Open Pack and tap the + button at the top.
- Type what you need, for example “adapter” or “sunscreen”. Typos are fine, the search figures out “tweezrs” means tweezers.
- Tap a result to add it.
Can’t find it in our 2,450-item catalog? Tap “Add ‘your text’ as my own item” at the top of the results. Your own items work just like the others: you can tick them, change the quantity and remove them.
How do I tick items off and change quantities?
- Swipe an item right to mark it packed, and swipe right again to unpack it. You can also tap its checkbox.
- Swipe left to remove it. An Undo button appears for a moment in case you slipped.
- Tap the row itself to open tips and options: use − and + to change the quantity, for example 5 pairs of socks, or tap Remove.
- Tap a category header to collapse or expand it.
The ring at the top shows how many items are packed. When everything is packed you’ll see “All packed. Bon voyage!”.
How do I filter or search my list?
At the top of your list you’ll find:
- A search box, “Find in my list”, to jump to any item.
- Filters: All, To pack and Packed, each showing a count.
- Category chips such as Clothing, Toiletries or Documents. Tap “Everything” to clear the category filter.
Filters combine, so “To pack” plus “Toiletries” shows exactly what’s left in your wash bag. If nothing shows, you’ll see “No items match these filters”; clear a filter to see everything again.
What are the hotel tips on some items?
Some items come with a hint that your accommodation usually provides them, for example towels, hair dryers, shampoo or bed linen. It helps you save space and weight.
The tip is a general guide, not a promise: hostels, holiday rentals and budget hotels often don’t supply these things. When it matters, check your booking confirmation or message your host before you leave out something important.
Can I take the packing quiz again?
Yes. Open Pack, tap the ••• button at the top and choose “Ask me the questions again”. You can also find “Redo the packing questions” in Settings under Packing.
The quiz goes through each category again. Items you already have stay on your list, and new “Pack it” answers are added. Use “Next (skip the rest)” to jump past a category you don’t care about, and “Finish” to stop at any time.
How do I reset my list for the trip home or a new trip?
To unpack everything but keep the items (handy for the trip home):
- Open Pack.
- Tap the ••• button.
- Choose “Unpack everything”.
All ticks are cleared and your items and quantities stay. Starting a completely new trip? Choose “Save as template” in the same menu first, so you can load this list again later. The free plan keeps 1 saved list; Plus and Pro keep as many as you like.
Can I have more than one packing list?
You have one active packing list, and you can save it as a template to reuse later: open Pack, tap ••• and choose “Save as template”. Templates keep the items and quantities, not the ticks. To use one, open the same menu and tap it under Saved lists; its items are added to your current list.
The free plan keeps 1 saved list. Plus and Pro keep unlimited saved lists, for example a “Weekend city break” and a “Beach week”. Delete a saved list with the bin icon next to it.
Does my packing list work offline?
Yes, fully. Your list, the item catalog and all the tips are stored on your phone, so you can add, search and tick items with no signal at all, even in flight mode.
If you are signed in, any changes you make offline sync to the cloud the next time you’re connected.
An item seems wrong or missing for my destination
Our suggestions are based on your answers and general travel knowledge, so they won’t be perfect for every trip. You can always:
- Remove anything you don’t need.
- Search for and add missing items.
- Redo the quiz after changing your destination or trip length in Settings.
If a suggestion is clearly wrong (for example winter gear for a beach trip), tell us through Contact us. Your feedback helps improve the list for everyone.
Change Helper & fair rates
Checking exchange offers, fairness bands and store ratings
What does the Change Helper do?
It helps you avoid bad rates when changing cash abroad. Here’s how it works:
- Enter the amount you want to change.
- Tap “Ask the exchange clerk”. We show a phrase in the clerk’s language asking how much you’ll get.
- The clerk says or types the amount, or you type it.
- We compare their offer with the real mid-market rate and tell you how much you’d pay in fees, with a clear verdict from “Excellent rate” to “Tourist trap”.
Unlimited checks are free on every plan.
Where does the real exchange rate come from?
We use the mid-market rate from open.er-api.com. That’s the midpoint between buying and selling prices on global currency markets, the fairest reference there is, with no fees added.
Rates are refreshed about once a day, and the screen shows when they were last updated. Currency markets move during the day, so small differences of a fraction of a percent are normal and not a sign the store is cheating.
What do the fairness verdicts mean?
We work out the fee the store is taking compared with the real rate:
- Up to 1%: Excellent rate. About as good as cash gets.
- 1–3%: Fair deal, in line with reputable exchange stores.
- 3–5%: A bit pricey. Acceptable, but you can probably do better nearby.
- 5–10%: Probably a rip-off. Consider another store.
- Over 10%: Tourist trap. Walk away if you can.
The verdict is information to help you decide, not financial advice.
What’s the difference between “Direct trade” and “Fair trade”?
On the Change screen you see two amounts for your money:
- Direct trade: what you’d get at the real mid-market rate with zero fees. No shop actually offers this; it’s the reference point.
- Fair trade: what a typical reputable store would give you, after a fee of about 1.5%.
If a clerk’s offer is close to the Fair trade amount, you’re in good shape. If it’s far below, the store is keeping a lot more.
How do I use the clerk phrase?
- Enter the amount you want to change and tap “Ask the exchange clerk”.
- Turn your phone around and show the clerk the phrase. It asks, in their language, exactly how much of the local currency they will hand you in total, after all fees.
- Tap “Read aloud” if you’d rather play it.
- Let the clerk say the number, or type it yourself in the amount box.
- Tap “Check this offer”.
The English version is shown too, in case our translation isn’t perfect.
Which languages is the clerk phrase available in?
The phrase is available in 115 languages. We pick the main language of the country you’re visiting automatically. In countries with several languages, like Switzerland or India, we ask which one the clerk speaks and remember your choice.
To switch, tap the language button at the top of the phrase screen. Some translations are less certain; for those we show the English underneath. Spotted a mistake in your language? Please tell us through Contact us.
Can the clerk just say the amount?
Yes, in the full app build. Tap “Let the clerk say it” and hold the phone towards them. TourIts listens, picks the number out of what they say and fills it in. Where the law needs the clerk’s agreement, they tap OK first, and the answer is recorded as proof.
In the preview version of the app, live speech-to-text isn’t available: the answer is still recorded as proof and you type the number.
Typing always works, in either style: 1,234.50 and 1.234,50 are both understood. In noisy places it’s often quicker to ask the clerk to type the amount on your screen.
It says “No rates yet”. What should I do?
The Change Helper needs to download exchange rates at least once. Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data and open the Change tab; rates download in a few seconds.
After that, the last rates are saved on your phone and the Change Helper keeps working offline. The date under the amounts shows how fresh they are. Try to update them at least once a day while travelling, for example on your hotel Wi-Fi.
I got less money than promised. What now?
Stay calm and stay at the counter if you can:
- Count your cash again in front of the clerk.
- On the result screen, answer “I got less” and enter how much is missing.
- Go back to the counter and play the recording of the promised amount, or show the screen with the amount they offered.
Most mistakes are fixed on the spot. If not, you can contact local tourist police or consumer protection. Rate the store afterwards so other travellers are warned.
How do I rate an exchange store?
After a check you can rate the store on the result screen:
- Enter the store name, for example “Correct Change, Váci utca”.
- Pick 1 to 5 stars and add an optional comment.
- Tap “Share rating”.
Ratings need an account and can be shared within 24 hours of the check. If you allowed location, it’s used to link your rating to the store on the map. Without it you can still rate the exchange, but the rating can’t be tied to a store. We share only the rate, time and store location, never your recording.
Any tips for getting a better exchange rate?
- Avoid airport, hotel and station counters; they are usually the most expensive.
- “0% commission” doesn’t mean free. The fee is hidden in a worse rate, which is exactly what the Change Helper reveals.
- ATMs of local banks are often cheaper. Decline the ATM’s offer to convert to your home currency.
- Ask whether there’s a better rate for a larger amount.
- Always count your cash before leaving the counter.
- Check the map for stores other travellers rated as fair.
How do I change the currencies?
The Change Helper uses your home currency and your destination’s currency from Settings. To swap either one for a single check, tap the currency next to “I have” or the one you’ll receive, then search and pick another. Search works with names, codes and small typos, so “yen”, “JPY” or “japn” all work.
When a symbol is shared by several currencies, such as $, £, ¥ or kr, amounts show the code instead (for example 200 AUD), so there’s no mix-up.
To change your home country or destination for good, go to Settings → Trip & profile → Where.
Recordings & consent
Proof recordings in the Change Helper and recording laws
Why does the Change Helper record the clerk?
When the clerk says the amount out loud, TourIts can keep a short audio recording as proof of what was promised. If you later receive less money, you can calmly play it back at the counter. It’s a simple, polite way to settle “I never said that” moments.
Recording is optional. You can always type the amount instead, and where local law requires the clerk’s agreement, we ask for it on screen first.
Why does the clerk have to tap OK?
Recording laws differ by country. In some places anyone in a conversation may record it; in others, everyone being recorded must agree. We keep a country-by-country guide, and where consent is required, or where the law is unclear, we show the clerk a short message in their language and they tap OK before recording starts.
If the clerk says no, that’s fine: skip recording and type the amount instead. Never record someone secretly.
How long are recordings kept?
Proof recordings are deleted automatically after a set time:
- 7 days in countries covered by the GDPR (the EU and similar), on every plan.
- Elsewhere: 30 days on Free, or 90 days with Plus or Pro.
The result screen shows the exact date: “Kept on this phone until …”. After that, the recording is gone for good and can’t be recovered. You can also delete it sooner: open the check and tap “Delete this check”, or use Settings → Privacy & data → Delete exchange recordings.
Where are my recordings stored? Do you listen to them?
Recordings stay only on your phone. They are never uploaded to our servers, never synced to your account and never shared with other travellers, even when you rate a store. We can’t listen to them, because we never have them.
This also means a recording only exists on the phone that made it. If you delete the app or lose the phone before the retention date, the recording is lost.
How do I play back a recording?
- Open the Change tab.
- Under “Recent checks”, tap the exchange you want.
- On the result screen, tap “Play recording”.
Turn up the volume and hold the phone so the clerk can hear it. If you see “This check is no longer available”, the check or its recording has passed its retention date and was deleted automatically.
Can I delete a recording straight away?
Yes. Open the check from “Recent checks” on the Change tab and tap “Delete this check”; the check and its recording are removed from your phone immediately. To remove every recording at once, go to Settings → Privacy & data → Delete exchange recordings.
Deleting all data on this phone, deleting your account, or guest data expiring after 7 days also removes every recording. There’s no need to keep recordings once you’ve counted your money and walked away happy.
Can I use the Change Helper without recording?
Absolutely. Recording only happens when you tap “Let the clerk say it”. Instead you can:
- Type the amount yourself in the box.
- Hand the phone to the clerk and ask them to type it.
The fairness check works exactly the same either way. Without a recording, the result screen still shows the offered amount, which you can show at the counter if something goes wrong.
Is the recording law information legal advice?
No. Our country guide is general information collected from public sources, and for many countries the law is unclear or changes. When we aren’t sure, we treat the country as requiring consent and keep recordings for the shortest time.
You are responsible for how you record. If in doubt, ask the clerk first, respect a “no”, and type the amount instead. For certainty about a specific country, check with a local legal professional.
The microphone button doesn’t work
If you see “Microphone access is off”, TourIts isn’t allowed to use the mic:
- iPhone: Settings app → TourIts → turn on Microphone.
- Android: Settings → Apps → TourIts → Permissions → Microphone → Allow.
Then return to TourIts and try again. In very noisy places the app may not catch the number; just type it. On some versions of the app, live speech-to-text isn’t available yet, and the recording is kept as proof while you type the number.
Trip planner
Trips, days, stops, travel times and daily recaps
How do I plan a trip?
- Open the Trip tab and tap + (or “Plan a trip”).
- Pick the country, an optional city and trip name, and your first and last day.
- Tap “Create trip”. TourIts makes one page per day and asks whether you’d like evening check-ins.
- On a day, tap “Add a stop” and search for a place, or add a custom stop.
- Set how long you’ll stay, or tap “Auto-schedule” to work out arrival times from each visit and journey.
Free trips can be up to 3 days; Plus and Pro plan trips of any length.
How are trips organised?
A trip has three levels:
- Trip: the destination, dates and name.
- Days: one for each date, each with its own start time and notes.
- Stops: the places you visit each day, with arrival time, how long you’ll stay, notes, and later a tick and rating.
To change the order, tap Reorder on a day and move stops with the up and down arrows, then tap Done. “Auto-schedule” works out arrival times from visit lengths and travel times.
How are travel times between stops worked out?
Between two stops that both have a location, TourIts shows the time and distance for the travel mode you pick:
- Walking (all plans): calculated with open routing data from OpenStreetMap.
- Transit (all plans): a rough estimate. Open the leg in your maps app for live times.
- Driving and cycling: Plus and Pro.
Times don’t include traffic, parking or waiting, so leave some slack. A stop without a location can’t show travel times; add a pin to fix that.
Can I open directions in Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze?
Yes. Tap a stop or the travel leg to it, then choose “Open in” and pick Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze. The app opens with directions to that stop already filled in.
If the app isn’t installed, we open the web version in your browser instead. Directions in those apps use their own live traffic and transit data, which can differ slightly from the estimates in TourIts.
What is the end-of-day recap?
In the evening of each trip day, TourIts can send a friendly notification, something like “Phew! Big day, but you made it. Tick off what you did?”. Tap it to open a quick recap where you tick off the stops you visited and give each one a rating.
It helps you remember your trip and improves the app picks for everyone. Recaps are free. You can turn them off or change the time in Settings → Notifications.
How many trips can I plan for free?
The free plan includes one trip of up to 3 days, which is perfect for a weekend away. Plus and Pro remove the limits: unlimited trips of any length, all travel modes and trip sharing.
If your plan ends, your trips stay. Anything above the free limit becomes read-only, so you can still view every day and stop, and editing unlocks again if you upgrade.
What are the booking links on some stops?
For stops like hotels, attractions and flights, TourIts can show quick links to search on booking sites such as Booking.com, GetYourGuide or Skyscanner. They open that site in your browser with the place or dates filled in.
Bookings are made directly with those companies under their terms and prices; TourIts isn’t part of the booking. Some links may earn us a small commission at no extra cost to you, which helps keep the free features free.
How do I change my trip dates?
Open the trip, tap the ••• button and choose “Edit trip”. Change the first or last day and tap “Save changes”. New days start empty. If you shorten the trip, TourIts tells you which stops will move from the removed days to the first or last day and asks you to confirm, so nothing is lost.
Free trips can be up to 3 days. Your trip length in Settings → Trip & profile is used for the packing list, so it’s worth updating that too if your dates change a lot.
Can I see my trip plan without internet?
Yes. Your trip, days, stops, times and notes are saved on your phone, so you can check and edit them offline. Travel times already calculated stay visible.
What needs a connection: calculating new travel times, searching for new places and opening directions in other map apps (unless those apps have their own offline maps). Save an offline map region for your destination to see your stops on a map without data.
Map & places
App picks, categories, search and place ratings
What does the TourIts map show?
The map shows places that matter to travellers, based on OpenStreetMap, the free world map built by millions of volunteers. On top of that we add:
- App picks: places we recommend, based on traveller ratings, fairness, distance and whether they’re open now.
- Categories to filter by.
- Exchange stores coloured by how fair other travellers found their rates.
- Ratings from TourIts users.
Tap any place to see details, opening hours and directions.
Which categories can I filter by?
Tap the chips at the top of the map to show:
- Hotels
- Attractions
- Food (filter by price, from $ to $$$$)
- Bars
- Exchange (fair stores in teal, pricey ones in coral)
- Culture
- Religious sites (only if you turned them on in Settings → Trip & profile → Faith)
- Tech
- Pharmacy & medical
- Groceries
Tap “App picks” to go back to our recommendations. Tap a chip again to hide that category.
How are “App picks” chosen?
App picks blend several signals:
- Ratings from TourIts travellers.
- Fairness, for exchange stores, based on real rates people were offered.
- How recent the ratings are.
- Distance from you.
- Whether it’s open now.
Nobody can pay to become an App pick. If we ever show sponsored places, they will be clearly labelled as sponsored, and Plus and Pro members won’t see them in lists.
How do I search for a place?
Tap the search bar at the top of the map and type a name or a type of place, like “pharmacy” or “ramen”. Search is forgiving with typos (up to two wrong letters) and understands plurals, so “musem” still finds museums.
Results close to you show first. Tap a result to jump to it on the map, see details or add it to your trip.
How do I rate a place?
Open a place from the map and tap the stars to rate it from 1 to 5, and add a short comment if you like. You’ll also be asked to rate your trip stops in the end-of-day recap.
Ratings need a free account, which helps us keep them honest. Please rate only places you actually visited and keep comments helpful and respectful; see our community guidelines for details.
A place has wrong details or opening hours
Place details come mainly from OpenStreetMap, which is edited by volunteers, so some information may be outdated. You can help:
- Tap the place, then “Report a problem” and tell us what’s wrong.
- If you like, fix it directly on openstreetmap.org, which improves maps for everyone.
For exchange stores, we also learn from travellers’ reports and flag stores that seem to trade outside their listed hours.
The map doesn’t show where I am
The map needs permission to use your location:
- iPhone: Settings app → TourIts → Location → While Using the App. Also turn on Precise Location.
- Android: Settings → Apps → TourIts → Permissions → Location → Allow only while using the app.
Then tap the locate button on the map. Indoors or underground, GPS can be slow or inaccurate; step outside for a better fix. The map works without your location too, you just won’t see distances.
How do I find a fair exchange store nearby?
- Open the map and tap the Exchange chip.
- Stores are coloured by their average fee: teal for fair, sun yellow for pricey, coral for rip-offs.
- Tap a store to see its average fee, number of reports and recent ratings.
The colours come from real checks other TourIts travellers made. Pro members can also switch on “Alert me near fair exchange stores” in the Exchange category to get a notification when a fairly rated store is a short walk away.
How do I show or hide religious sites?
Religious and heritage sites appear only if you ask for them:
- Open Settings → Trip & profile.
- Under Faith, turn on “Show religious & heritage sites”.
- Optionally pick your faith, which adds a “My faith” chip on the map.
The Religious sites category then appears on the map. Turn the switch off again to hide it. Your choice stays on your phone and, if you sign in, in your private account; it’s never shared.
Can I add a place from the map to my trip?
Yes. Open the place from the map, tap “Add to trip”, then pick the trip and the day and tap “Add to Day …”. It’s added as a new stop on that day, and TourIts works out the travel time from the previous stop. No trip yet? The sheet lets you create one first.
To put it in the right spot, open the day, tap Reorder and use the arrows, then set how long you plan to stay.
Offline use
What works without data and how to prepare
What works without an internet connection?
Works offline:
- Packing lists and the full item catalog.
- Change Helper checks, using your last downloaded rates.
- Clerk phrases in all 115 languages.
- Your trip plan and notes.
- Offline map regions you’ve downloaded.
- Downloaded phrasebooks, and offline translation on Pro.
Needs a connection: fresh rates, online map search, new travel times, online translation, sharing ratings and cloud sync.
How should I prepare before I fly?
On Wi-Fi before you leave:
- Open the Change tab so the latest exchange rates download.
- Save an offline area for your destination: Map → Offline maps (Plus or Pro).
- In the Translator, open Offline packs and download the phrasebook for your destination’s language.
- Open your trip plan so travel times are calculated.
- If you have an account, tap Settings → Account → Sync now.
That way the essentials work the moment you land, even before you buy a local SIM.
How do I download an offline map region?
- Open the Map and tap the Offline maps button (the cloud with a down arrow).
- Choose “Visible map” or “Trip city” and give the area a name.
- Check the estimated size and tap Download.
In this version an offline area saves places, opening hours and exchange stores; offline map images come with the full app build. Free doesn’t include offline areas, Plus includes 3 and Pro has no limit. Update or delete your areas on the same screen. Wi-Fi is recommended for big areas.
Do offline map regions update?
Yes. Saved areas older than 7 days refresh automatically when you open the app online, and you can tap Update on any area in Map → Offline maps.
If you move to a plan with fewer regions, for example from Pro to Plus or Free, the extra areas stay on your phone but are locked: they aren’t refreshed until you upgrade again, and you can still delete them. Live information such as new ratings appears once you’re online.
How much space do offline downloads use?
Rough sizes:
- An offline area: the estimated size is shown before you download, and depends on how big the area is.
- A phrasebook: small; the size is shown next to each pack.
- The packing catalog and clerk phrases are built into the app.
See and delete offline areas in Map → Offline maps, and phrasebooks in Translator → Offline packs. Deleting a download frees the space right away and doesn’t affect your lists or trips.
How old can offline exchange rates be?
The Change Helper always uses the latest rates it downloaded, and shows the date under the amounts. Major currencies usually move less than 1% in a few days, so rates from a day or two ago are fine for spotting a bad deal.
If your rates are more than a few days old, we remind you to update them. For currencies that swing quickly, treat verdicts near a boundary (for example 2.9% vs 3.1%) with a pinch of salt.
What happens to changes I make offline?
Everything you do offline is saved on your phone right away. If you’re signed in, TourIts uploads the changes the next time you have a connection, with no need to do anything.
If you edited the same item on two devices while offline, the most recent change wins when they sync. Store ratings you want to share still need to be sent within 24 hours of the check.
How can I keep mobile data use low?
TourIts is light on data, but to keep roaming costs down:
- Do your downloads (rates, map regions, phrasebooks) on Wi-Fi.
- Use offline map regions instead of the online map.
- Online translation and map search use very little data, but photos and map browsing use more.
Your phone’s Settings let you turn off mobile data for TourIts entirely; the offline features keep working.
Translator
Text, voice, phrasebooks and conversation mode
How do I translate something?
- Open the Translator.
- Check the two languages at the top. Tap one to change it, or tap the swap arrows.
- Type or paste your text.
- On Free, tap Translate, or finish a sentence and it translates by itself. On Plus and Pro it translates as you type.
- Copy, share, save to favourites or tap the speaker to hear it read aloud.
Online translation is powered by the MyMemory service. Free includes 20 translations a day; Plus and Pro are unlimited. Read-aloud is free for everyone.
Can I speak instead of typing?
Voice input, speaking instead of typing, is part of Plus and Pro. Tap the microphone, say your sentence, and TourIts turns it into text and translates it. It needs the full app build; in the preview version, typing works everywhere.
Read-aloud is free on every plan: tap the speaker on any translation to play it to the other person.
You’ll be asked for microphone permission the first time. Speak clearly and not too fast; background noise makes recognition harder.
What are offline phrasebooks?
Phrasebooks are downloadable packs of ready-made phrases for travellers, for situations like greetings, restaurants, transport, shopping, health and emergencies. They work with no connection and can be read aloud. When you’re offline, the translator also suggests the closest phrase from your packs.
You only need the pack for your destination’s language. Free includes 1 pack; Plus and Pro include all of them. Download them in Translator → Offline packs, ideally on Wi-Fi before your trip.
Can I translate anything offline?
Offline translation of any text is a Pro feature. It runs on your phone using Apple or Google on-device language models, so the text doesn’t leave your device. It needs the full TourIts app build and isn’t available in the preview version.
On every plan you can still use offline phrasebooks (Free: 1 pack) and the clerk phrases in the Change Helper without a connection. Online text translation works anywhere you have signal.
What is conversation mode?
Conversation mode (Pro) is made for talking face to face. The screen splits in two, with one half facing you and the other half upside down facing the other person. Each of you taps your side and speaks; the translation appears in big text on the other side and can be read aloud.
It’s great at hotel desks, pharmacies and taxi ranks. Put the phone flat on the table between you for the best result.
I hit the daily translation limit
The free plan includes 20 online translations a day. The count resets at midnight on your phone’s clock. Only translations you ask for count: on Free, text is translated when you tap Translate or finish a sentence, not while you type.
Until the count resets you can still:
- Use your offline phrasebook.
- Use the clerk phrase in the Change Helper.
- Upgrade to Plus or Pro for unlimited translations.
How accurate are translations?
Machine translation is very good for everyday travel talk but not perfect. It can struggle with slang, idioms, names and long complex sentences.
Tips:
- Use short, simple sentences.
- Avoid jokes and idioms.
- Show the text as well as playing it.
- For anything important, such as allergies, medication or legal documents, confirm with a person or a professional translator.
Never rely on a translation alone in a medical emergency; call local emergency services.
What happens to the text I translate?
For online translation, your text is sent to the MyMemory translation service to be translated, and the result is sent back. Please don’t translate passwords, card numbers or very personal details online.
We don’t use your translations for advertising. Offline phrasebooks and Pro offline translation run entirely on your phone, so the text never leaves your device. Voice input is converted to text first; we don’t keep the audio.
Which languages can I translate?
Online translation supports well over 100 languages. Phrasebooks cover the most common travel languages, and we add more over time. Offline translation on Pro starts with the most popular language pairs.
If your language isn’t there yet, tell us through Contact us so we know what to add next. For currency exchange, the clerk phrase is already available in 115 languages.
Subscriptions & billing
Plans, upgrading, cancelling, renewals and refunds
What’s the difference between Free, Plus and Pro?
- Free: your packing list plus 1 saved list, unlimited Change Helper checks, one trip up to 3 days with walking and transit estimates, the online map, 20 translations a day, read-aloud and 1 offline phrasebook.
- Plus: unlimited saved lists and trips, list and trip sharing, drive and bike times, 3 offline map regions, unlimited translation with voice input, all phrasebooks and 90-day proof recordings outside GDPR countries.
- Pro: everything in Plus, plus unlimited offline regions, offline translation, conversation mode, fair exchange alerts and priority support.
Paid plans need an account.
What does “test mode” mean?
Real payments aren’t switched on yet. Until they are, subscribing runs in test mode:
- You can try Plus or Pro and every feature unlocks.
- No money is charged, and no card or store payment is requested.
- The subscription screen clearly says “Test mode”.
When real billing starts, we’ll tell you in the app before anything changes. Test subscriptions will never turn into paid ones without you choosing to subscribe through the App Store or Google Play.
How do I upgrade to Plus or Pro?
- Sign in or create a free account, because paid plans are tied to your account.
- Open the plans screen from Settings or from any locked feature.
- Choose Plus or Pro, and monthly or yearly billing (yearly works out cheaper).
- Confirm.
Once real billing is live, payment goes through your App Store or Google Play account. The new features unlock straight away on every device where you’re signed in.
How much do Plus and Pro cost?
Current planned prices:
- Plus: $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year.
- Pro: $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year.
Prices in your country may be shown in local currency and can include local taxes, set by the App Store or Google Play. The exact price is always shown on the plans screen before you confirm. During test mode nothing is charged.
How do I cancel my subscription?
In test mode, open Settings → Subscription, tap “Cancel subscription” and confirm. Your plan stays active until the end of the current billing period and ends that day; you won’t be charged again. Changed your mind? Tap “Resume subscription” before that date.
Once real billing is live, you can also cancel in your app store:
- iPhone: Settings app → your name → Subscriptions → TourIts.
- Android: Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
Deleting the app doesn’t cancel a subscription.
What happens after I cancel?
Nothing changes right away. You keep all Plus or Pro features until the last day of your billing period, and the plan ends that day. Until then you can still tap “Resume subscription”. We remind you 3 days and 1 day before, and on the day it ends.
After that you’re on Free. Your data stays: extra trips become read-only, extra offline areas are kept but no longer refreshed, and everything unlocks again if you resubscribe. New proof recordings follow the Free retention: 7 days in GDPR countries, 30 days elsewhere.
Does my subscription renew automatically?
Yes. Plans renew automatically at the end of each month or year, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Payment is taken by the App Store or Google Play from the account you subscribed with.
We send a reminder 3 days and 1 day before renewal, so there are no surprises. You can check your renewal date any time under My subscription.
Can I get a refund?
Payments are handled by Apple or Google, so refunds follow their rules:
- iPhone: go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose “Request a refund”.
- Android: in Google Play, open Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history, or use Google’s refund request page.
TourIts can’t issue partial refunds from inside the app. If something went wrong with your purchase, contact us too and we’ll help where we can. In test mode no money is charged, so there is nothing to refund.
How do I restore my purchase on a new phone?
- Sign in with the same TourIts account you used to subscribe.
- Your plan is recognised automatically, because plans belong to your account.
If it isn’t, open Settings → Subscription and tap “Restore purchases” under Purchases. Once real billing is live, also make sure you’re signed in with the same Apple ID or Google account that made the purchase. Still missing? Contact us and we’ll sort it out.
Can I switch between Plus and Pro or monthly and yearly?
Yes. Open Settings → Subscription:
- Upgrading (for example Plus to Pro): tap “Change plan” and pick the new plan. It applies straight away.
- Downgrading (Pro to Plus): it’s scheduled for your next renewal, so you keep what you have until then.
- Monthly or yearly: tap “Switch billing cycle”. The new cycle starts at your next renewal.
A scheduled change shows under Billing. To undo it, tap “Keep …”, for example “Keep Pro Yearly”. In test mode nothing is charged.
Will you remind me before I’m charged or my plan ends?
Yes. If notifications are on, TourIts reminds you:
- 3 days before your plan renews or ends.
- 1 day before.
- On the day a cancelled plan ends.
You’ll also see the date on the Subscription screen. Billing reminders are part of your subscription, not marketing, but you can turn them off with “Subscription reminders” in Settings → Notifications, or “Renewal & expiry reminders” on the Subscription screen.
Can the price of my subscription change?
We may change prices in the future. If the price of your plan goes up, you’ll be told in advance by us and by the App Store or Google Play, and in many countries you’ll be asked to agree before the new price applies. If you don’t agree, the subscription ends at the end of your current period.
Price changes never apply to a period you’ve already paid for.
Can my family use my subscription?
A subscription belongs to one TourIts account and works on every device where that account is signed in. We don’t offer family plans yet.
Your travel companions can still join the trips you share (Plus and Pro) with their own free accounts, without needing a paid plan. If Apple Family Sharing becomes available for TourIts, we’ll mention it on the plans screen.
Notifications
What we send, when, and how to control it
What notifications does TourIts send?
- End-of-day recap: an evening nudge on trip days to tick off and rate your stops.
- Exchange tips: 45 minutes after a Change Helper check, a reminder to confirm you got the full amount and rate the store.
- Subscription reminders: 3 days and 1 day before renewal or expiry, plus on the day a cancelled plan ends.
- Fair exchange alerts nearby (Pro): when you’re near a store other travellers rated as fair.
Each one can be switched on or off; see Settings → Notifications. News & offers is a separate, optional choice.
How do I turn notifications on or off?
- Open Settings → Notifications.
- Use the switches for End-of-day recap, Subscription reminders and Exchange tips. Fair exchange alerts are switched on or off in the Map’s Exchange category.
To block all TourIts notifications, use your phone’s settings:
- iPhone: Settings app → Notifications → TourIts.
- Android: Settings → Apps → TourIts → Notifications.
If notifications are blocked at phone level, the switches in TourIts can’t override that; we show a note with a shortcut to fix it.
Can I change when the daily recap arrives?
Yes. Go to Settings → Notifications → Recap time, pick the hours and minutes and tap Save. The recap uses your phone’s local time, so it still arrives in the evening after you change time zones.
Recap time can only be changed while “End-of-day recap” is on. Recaps are sent only on trip days that have stops planned, so you won’t get them at home.
I’m not getting notifications
Check these in order:
- Your phone allows TourIts notifications (Settings app → Notifications → TourIts).
- The notification type is on in TourIts → Settings → Notifications.
- Focus, Do Not Disturb or Battery Saver isn’t hiding them.
- On Android, battery optimisation isn’t stopping TourIts; set it to “Unrestricted”.
- For recaps, you have a trip planned for today.
Restarting your phone after changing these settings can help.
Will you send me marketing emails or ads?
Only if you say yes. News, tips and offers by email or push are off by default and need your opt-in. You can withdraw at any time in Settings → Notifications, or with the unsubscribe link in any email.
Service messages, like password resets, account security notices and subscription reminders, aren’t marketing and are sent when needed. TourIts doesn’t show third-party ads.
How do fair-exchange alerts work?
Fair exchange alerts nearby are a Pro feature. To turn them on, open the Map, tap the Exchange category and switch on “Alert me near fair exchange stores”. The row in Settings → Notifications takes you there.
While you’re using TourIts, it looks for a store within a short walk that travellers rated as fair: an average fee of 3% or less from at least 2 reports. You get a notification with its name and average fee, at most once per store per day. It needs location and notification permission; no background location is used.
Why did I get a reminder to rate an exchange?
That’s the Exchange tips reminder. About 45 minutes after a Change Helper check, TourIts asks whether you got the full amount and invites you to rate the store while you remember. Tap it to open that check. The Change tab also shows the pending exchange at the top.
Rating is optional, needs an account and is possible within 24 hours of the check. Don’t want these reminders? Turn off Settings → Notifications → Exchange tips.
Can I make notifications silent?
Yes, using your phone’s settings:
- iPhone: Settings app → Notifications → TourIts → turn off Sounds, or choose Deliver Quietly from a notification.
- Android: Settings → Apps → TourIts → Notifications → choose Silent for each category.
The notifications still appear in your notification centre, just without sound or vibration.
Accessibility & appearance
Text size, dark mode, motion, contrast and haptics
Does TourIts have dark mode?
Yes. Go to Settings → Appearance and choose:
- Automatic: follows your phone’s light or dark setting (the default).
- Light: always the sand-coloured light theme.
- Dark: always dark, easier on the eyes at night.
The change applies immediately to every screen. On the same screen you can also choose kilometres or miles for distances.
How do I make the text bigger?
Go to Settings → Accessibility → Text size. There are 5 sizes, from Small to Largest:
- Tap one of the steps on the bar, or
- Use the Smaller and Larger buttons.
The preview at the top updates as you go. TourIts also follows your phone’s text size setting (Dynamic Type on iPhone, Font size on Android). Layouts adapt to larger text, so buttons and lists stay usable. Turn on Bold text as well for extra readability.
What does Bold text do?
Bold text makes all text in TourIts heavier, which is easier to read for many people, especially in bright sunlight or with low vision. Turn it on in Settings → Accessibility → Bold text.
It’s a TourIts setting: it doesn’t read your phone’s own bold text setting, so switch it on here even if bold text is already on for your whole phone. It works together with the Text size setting.
Can I turn off animations?
Yes. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Motion and choose:
- Phone setting: follows your phone’s Reduce Motion setting (the default).
- Reduce motion: sliding screen transitions become simple fades and bouncy animations are turned off.
- Full motion: always shows all animations.
This can help if animations make you feel dizzy or distracted.
Is there a high contrast mode?
Yes. Turn on Settings → Accessibility → Increase contrast. Text becomes darker and borders clearer, so everything stands out more.
It’s a TourIts setting and works in both light and dark mode. It doesn’t read your phone’s own Increase Contrast setting, so switch it on here if you need it. Combine it with Bold text and a larger Text size for the best readability.
How do I turn vibrations (haptics) off?
TourIts uses light taps of vibration to confirm actions, like ticking an item or choosing a star rating. To turn them off, open Settings → Accessibility and switch off Haptics.
If your phone’s system haptics or vibration are turned off, TourIts won’t vibrate either.
Does TourIts work with VoiceOver and TalkBack?
Yes. Buttons, icons and controls have spoken labels, for example “Add item” or “Read aloud”, and many have hints explaining what they do. Screens are ordered so a screen reader moves through them logically.
We keep improving this. If something isn’t labelled or is hard to reach with a screen reader, please tell us which screen and button through Contact us and we’ll fix it.
The fairness colours are hard for me to tell apart
Colour is never the only signal. Every fairness verdict also has a clear title (“Fair deal”, “Tourist trap”), an icon and the exact percentage. On the map, exchange stores show their average fee in text when you tap them.
Turning on Increase contrast in Settings → Accessibility makes text and borders stand out more too. If a specific screen still relies only on colour, please let us know.
Does TourIts support right-to-left languages?
Yes. When you choose a right-to-left language such as Hebrew or Arabic in Settings → Preferences → Language, TourIts restarts and the layout mirrors: text aligns to the right, and back buttons and lists flip to match. Numbers, prices and currency codes keep their usual direction so amounts stay easy to read.
Switching back to a left-to-right language restarts the app again. Translations are being rolled out step by step, so some screens may still show English.
Troubleshooting
Fixes for loading, location, microphone and sync problems
The app won’t load or is stuck on a blank screen
Try these steps in order:
- Close TourIts completely (swipe it away from the app switcher) and open it again.
- Check that you have the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
- Restart your phone.
- Make sure your phone has some free storage space.
If it still won’t open, contact us with your phone model and system version. Please don’t delete the app before contacting us if you’re a guest, because that would erase your data.
TourIts keeps crashing
Sorry about that. Please:
- Update TourIts to the latest version.
- Update your phone’s system if an update is waiting.
- Restart your phone.
- Note what you were doing just before the crash.
Then contact us with the screen, the steps that cause the crash, your phone model and system version. That helps us find and fix it quickly. If you’re signed in, your data is safe in the cloud even if you need to reinstall.
My location is wrong or not found
- Make sure Location Services are on for your phone.
- Allow TourIts to use location: iPhone Settings app → TourIts → Location → While Using the App, with Precise Location on; Android Settings → Apps → TourIts → Permissions → Location.
- Go outside or near a window; GPS struggles indoors and underground.
- Turn Wi-Fi on, even without connecting, as it improves accuracy in cities.
- Close and reopen the map.
Voice input isn’t hearing anything
- Check microphone permission: iPhone Settings app → TourIts → Microphone; Android Settings → Apps → TourIts → Permissions → Microphone.
- Make sure no other app (a call, a voice recorder) is using the microphone.
- Remove any case or finger covering the mic at the bottom of the phone.
- Move away from loud noise and speak a little closer.
- Restart TourIts.
You can always type the amount or text instead.
My data isn’t syncing between devices
- Make sure both devices are signed in with the same email (Settings → Account).
- Check both have an internet connection.
- On the device with the latest changes, open Settings → Account and tap “Sync now”.
- On the other device, do the same, or close and reopen TourIts.
If you see “Couldn’t sync”, try again on a different network; some public Wi-Fi blocks connections. Proof recordings and offline downloads never sync by design.
I can’t sign in
- Check the email is spelled correctly and there’s no space at the end.
- Passwords are case-sensitive; check Caps Lock.
- If you just created the account, you may need to confirm your email first.
- Use “Forgot password?” to set a new password.
- Try another network in case the connection is blocked.
If you see a message about too many attempts, wait a few minutes and try again. Still stuck? Contact us.
My packing list or trip disappeared
Common causes:
- Guest data expired: guest data is deleted after 7 days.
- Signed out or signed in to a different account: check the email in Settings → Account.
- Filters: on the packing list, tap All and Everything to clear filters.
- A different device: sync may not have finished; tap “Sync now”.
If you were signed in and the data is still missing, contact us quickly with your account email and we’ll check.
The exchange rate looks wrong
- Check the date under the amounts. If rates are a few days old, connect to the internet to refresh them.
- Make sure the currencies are right: tap each currency to check, for example CHF and not EUR in Switzerland.
- Remember we use the mid-market rate, which is always better than what any store or bank offers. The “Fair trade” amount (about 1.5% less) is a better real-world target.
If a rate still looks far off, contact us with the currencies and time.
The app feels slow or uses a lot of battery
- Close and reopen TourIts, and update to the latest version.
- Maps and location use the most battery. Close the map when you’re not using it.
- Turn on Reduce motion in Settings → Accessibility for a lighter feel on older phones.
- Delete offline map regions you no longer need to free up storage.
- Low Power Mode can slow animations but won’t break anything.
If a specific screen is consistently slow, tell us which one.
How do I report a bug?
Open Help, tap “Contact support” and choose “Something isn’t working”. The most useful reports include:
- What you did, step by step.
- What you expected and what happened instead.
- Which screen you were on.
Leave “Include app details” on: it adds the app version, phone model, system and language, with no location or personal content. It works as a guest too; just add your email. We usually reply within 2 business days, and Pro members get priority. Thank you for helping make TourIts better.
Privacy & safety
Your data, where it’s stored and staying safe abroad
What data does TourIts collect?
As little as we can:
- On your phone: your setup answers, lists, trips, checks and recordings.
- With an account: your email, plus your setup answers, lists, trips and settings, synced to your private account.
- When you rate an exchange store: the rate, time and store location. Never your recording.
- Support messages: what you write, plus app details (version, phone model, system) only if you leave that option on.
We don’t sell your data, and we don’t use advertising trackers. The Privacy Policy has the full details.
Where is my data stored?
- On your phone, in a local database that only TourIts can read.
- If you have an account, in our cloud database run by Supabase in the European Union (Frankfurt, Germany).
Data travels between your phone and our servers encrypted. Some features send limited data to other services to work, for example text to MyMemory for translation, or map searches to OpenStreetMap services.
Do you track my location?
No. We use your location only while you’re using the app, for things you ask for: suggesting your language and country during setup, showing nearby places, and linking an exchange rating to the store you used. Pro fair exchange alerts check your location while the app is open; no background location is used.
When you share a store rating, only the store’s location is shared, not your route or history. We don’t sell or share location data for advertising.
Do you sell my data?
No. We don’t sell your personal data and we don’t share it with advertisers. We use a small number of service providers, such as Supabase for our database and open services for maps, rates and translation, only to make the app work.
If we ever add sponsored places or booking partners, we’ll label them clearly and won’t hand over your personal data without asking.
Can I get a copy of my data?
Yes. Open Settings → Privacy & data and tap “Export my data”. TourIts creates a JSON file with everything stored on this phone, such as your profile, lists, trips, checks and settings, and opens the share sheet so you can save or send it. Sign-in tokens are never included.
If you have an account, your synced data is the same as on your phone. For anything else we hold, such as store ratings or support messages, contact support and we’ll send it, usually within a month.
How do I delete everything?
Open Settings → Privacy & data:
- Guest: tap “Delete all data on this phone” to erase your lists, trips, exchanges, settings and recordings immediately.
- Signed in: tap “Delete my account”. It takes you to Settings → Account, where you confirm, and your account, cloud data, reports and everything on this phone are deleted.
Neither can be undone. To remove only recordings, use “Delete exchange recordings”. Once real billing is live, also cancel any subscription in your app store settings.
Can children use TourIts?
TourIts is designed for adults and older teens planning their travel. Accounts are for people aged 16 and over (or the minimum age in your country, if higher). Younger travellers can use TourIts on a parent’s phone under their supervision, without an account.
If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we’ll delete it.
How can I avoid common tourist scams?
A few habits help a lot:
- Check exchange offers with the Change Helper and count your cash at the counter.
- Use ATMs inside banks, and decline “conversion to your home currency”.
- Agree on taxi prices or insist on the meter; use official ranks or apps.
- Be wary of friendly strangers offering help with machines, tickets or “closed” attractions.
- Keep valuables in a front pocket in crowds.
If something feels off, walk away.
What should I do in an emergency abroad?
TourIts isn’t an emergency service. In an emergency, call the local emergency number straight away: 112 works across the EU and in many other countries, 911 in North America.
Also useful:
- The Pharmacy & medical category on the map finds help nearby.
- Phrasebooks include health and emergency phrases.
- Save your embassy’s contact details and your travel insurance number before you travel.
How do I report a fake or abusive review?
If a rating or comment looks fake, offensive or shares someone’s personal details, tap the ••• next to it and choose Report, then pick a reason. Our team reviews reports and removes content that breaks our community guidelines.
You can also contact us with the place name and a description. Please don’t reply to abusive content yourself.
